Ligue 1 Football LeagueLigue 1 is first in hierarchy on professional football league championship with the French second division to form the Professional Football League (Ligue de Football Professionnel) the second league called the Ligue 2.

Ligue 1 is composed of 20 professional football clubs championships starting in August and ending in May .Every football team play a series of 38 games out of 380 in first league.Matches are played  in Ligue 1 on Saturday and Sunday during the week, rescheduled matches playing on wekdays. French football championship have a break with a week before the Christmas holidays for a period of two weeks and resume the second week in January.

Ligue 1 is in top professional football league of European Leagues placed in fifth place after the football championships of England, Premier League, Spain-La Liga, Italy-Serie A and German football league Bundesliga.

Main sponsor of the French football championship first league is telecommunications company Orange thats why first league is known as Ligue 1 Orange.

Ligue 1 was opened on 11 September 1932 under name National ,after only a season  named Division 1 ,name that will describe French football league until 2002 when he moved to the present name.

Ligue 1 went over time by its three major corruption scandals and has taken serious decisions against the professional football clubs or persons implicate.The three events took place in 1933 (Antibes) 1950 ( Red Star) and 1993 (Olimpique Marseille).

Ligue 1 has a close relationship with the second division of French football, Ligue 2, every year promoting or relegating three teams in Ligue 2.

French football league clubs that compete in first division, 20 clubs are located on France teritory only one is outside of France ,that is Monaco  located on teritory with same name.

Clubs ranked in the top league football Ligue 1 are rewarded with participation in European football cups:

  • Places I-II  play directly into the Champions League groups
  • Place III play in the qualifying rounds Champions League
  • Place IV play directly on Europa League groups
